Pioneer packs
The pioneer packages are for those who want challenges and are either experienced in canoes or just want new and exciting experiences.
In addition to the challenges, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the unique nature that Gudenåen and its surroundings offer. You'll fill your lungs with fresh air and can be sure that you'll feel a pleasant sense of tiredness in your body by the end of the day.
The pioneer packages span 2 - 3 - 4 or 5 days, and accommodation is in 4-person igloo tents at recommended campsites. The tent is handed out together with the canoe on the start day, and the tent is then yours to take home at the end of the trip.
Our recommendations of accommodations is exclusively at primitive campsites along the river, and you are responsible for pitching your tent every night. You'll need to pay for the primitive campsites, where it typically costs between DKK 40 and DKK 50 to spend the night - however, simple sites are free to stay overnight. You can find the prices for the individual tent pitches See here.

Day 1:
From this lovely campsite you start your trip on the Gudenå River. You're away from civilisation and the first place you come to is Gudenå Camping, located in Brestenbro - here you have to pay a small fee for a pitch. They have a nice cafeteria here.
After Brestenbro the water is deeper and the river a little wider. At Bredvadmølle there is a rest area with a toilet, which you find by turning right just before Bredvad Bro. Shortly after sailing under Bredvad Bridge, you'll come to Bredvad Lake, which you sail through and then keep right, where you'll find Vestbirk Camping. At Vestbirk Camping you can stock up on provisions and satisfy your hunger in their grill bar.
The stretch towards Voervadsbro is one of the river's most beautiful. After Vestbirk Camping, keep right and sail through a small canal (remember to keep right). You'll pass through the upper part of Naldal Lake and into Vestbirk Lake, where you'll pass through another canal. You'll reach Vestbirk Hydroelectric Power Station, which is definitely worth a visit. At Vestbirk Hydroelectric Power Station, the canoe must be "carried" across with the designated canoe carriages.
When you arrive at Voervadsbro Teltplads, you'll set up camp for the night - don't miss the restaurant Det Lille Røgeri. It is located a 5 min. walk from the campsite. In the restaurant, which is also a shop, you can eat your fill of delicacies. In the shop you can buy Italian specialities, smoked trout and homemade fish cakes in addition to a few groceries. You can order picnic baskets in advance. Groceries or breakfast can be delivered to the site by contacting Sdr. Vissing Torvehal no later than 16.00 the day before.
Day 2:
You have about 1.5 hours sailing time to Klostermølle. This stretch is one of the river's most beautiful experiences. You sail through jungle-like vegetation, narrow passages and wide rapids. It's important to stay in the channel where the river is deepest, otherwise you risk getting stuck with the canoe. Just before you arrive at Klostermølle, you'll sail on the Klosterkanalen canal.
When you arrive at Klostermølle Teltplads, you will need to pull the canoes onto the shore as there is a canoe carry-over. Remember to use the designated canoe trolleys for this.
Klostermølle is definitely worth a visit. Here is an old dam that was first established by the monks back in the 13th century at Vor Kloster. You can also see an old drying barn for cardboard production, an exhibition about history and nature, as well as a bird tower with a beautiful view of Mossø. Here you will also find the path to Sukkertoppen, which is 108 metres high. From the top there is a magnificent view.
The river winds beautifully through the landscape and the course is set towards Gammel Rye and Emborg Bro, where there is a rest area with toilets and tables/benches in both places.
To get to Ry, you need to cross Birksø. To cross Birksø, keep left in Åløbet. A canal has been established here for a short crossing - remember to use the designated canoe carriages, which will typically be on the other side. If you then turn right, you will arrive at Ry boat harbour, the rowing club and Skimminghøj Teltplads, where the canoe must be returned by 16:00.

Ry - Ans
Period: 1 April to 30 September
Sailing time: 48 km and 13.5 hours
Get started | The end | Km | Time | |
Day 1 | Ry / Skimminghøj Campsite | The Little Fishes Campsite | 15 | 4.5 hours |
Day 2 | The Little Fishes Campsite | Sminge Campsite | 15 | 4 hours |
Day 3 | Sminge Campsite | Ans Campsite* | 18 | 5 hours |
*If you wish to change your final destination, you can do so by phone no later than 12.00 noon on the last day of sailing.
Price per canoe, including tent from: 1,650 kr.
Recommended places to stay: De Små Fisk Teltplads and Sminge Teltplads*
*Any accommodation fees are not included in the price.
Day 1:
Shortly after Ry, you'll sail past Alling Vest Teltplads, which is an incredibly beautiful and protected area.
The tour now heads out through Rosvig and out into Julsø. Here you can sail to Himmelbjerget and moor at Hotel Julsø, where Hjejlen and the scheduled boats also moor. Remember to either pull the canoe up to the left of the tour boats at bridge 51 or all the way to the right of Hjejlen and the tour boats' moorings at the small sandy beach.
Møgelø is located to the right after Himmelbjerget. Møgelø is an island in Julsø opposite Himmelbjerget. The name Møgelø means "Big Island" as it is the largest in the lake with 28 acres of land.
Before Svejbæksnævringen you will find the restaurants: Ålekroen, Traktørstedet Ludvigslyst and Skyttehusets Café - remember to check their opening hours if lunch is to be enjoyed here.
You'll then sail further into Borresø, and a visit to Slåensø (located to the left in Borresø) is definitely worth a visit. You'll have to pull your canoe/kayak onto land at the bottom of bridge 30, and from there it's a short walk to Slåensø, one of Denmark's cleanest freshwater lakes.
The Paradise Islands are also to the left, and if time permits, you can sail to Paradise. Borresø is divided into two sections, so to speak - a relatively deep eastern part, through which the river Gudenåen flows, and a somewhat shallower western part with four small islands, collectively known as the Paradise Islands.
Now you pass through Sejssnævringen and into Brassø, where De små Fisk Teltplads is on the right-hand side and you set up camp for the night. A short walk into Sejs brings you to shopping and places to eat. It's a lovely scenic park-like area with space for ball games. There is also a swimming area that is fenced in.
Day 2:
It's a must to sail through Klüver's canal, which is located after Bridge no. 7. It's not very wide or deep and the trees grow over it, so the branches and leaves almost form a "roof". But there's just enough room for you to sail your canoe through, and from here you enter the most beautiful lake in the middle of the forest. The lake is called Avnsø and is usually called "The Glasses", a name given to the lake due to its shape because it actually resembles a pair of old-fashioned nose glasses.
Now the journey continues towards Silkeborg, where you'll be travelling on the 2.5 km long Remstrup River. Remstrup Å runs from Brassø to Silkeborg Harbour, where Silkeborg Kanocenter is also based, after which the river flows into Silkeborg Langsø.
When you arrive at Silkeborg Harbour/Silkeborg Kanocenter, you'll have to pass through Kammerslusen to get north. It's a good idea to take a break and buy provisions, and perhaps take a short walk up to Silkeborg's cosy town centre with shopping opportunities, boutiques and restaurants.
You will then sail past the Silkeborg Paper Factory area, where Jysk Musik & Teaterhus, cinema, hotel,
restaurants etc. are located. When you reach Silkeborg Langsø, turn right and shortly afterwards you'll be on a narrower Gudenå. Take your time and let the current help you on your way. Just before Resenbro there is a rest area with a toilet on your left.
After about 2.5 hours of sailing, you'll arrive at Sminge Lake, one of the best birdwatching spots along the Gudenåen river. After sailing through Sminge Lake, where you stay on the left side, the river will gather again and not long after you will arrive at the Sminge car park on your left. Here you'll find the Bird Tower, which offers an impressive view of Sminge Lake.
Opposite Sminge Rasterplads, on the other side of the water, to the right as you approach by boat, is Sminge Teltplads, which is a protected site and therefore a very cosy and intimate nature site. This is where you camp for the night.
Svostrup Kro, one of the old Pramdrager Kroer, is located about 800 metres ahead on the left, on the opposite side of the campsite. Some people choose to book a table at the most cosy inn, as it is possible to sail over to the opposite side and walk along the Trækstien / Pramdragerstien path to the inn and back to the rest area, after which you sail back to the campsite again.
Day 3:
You sail towards Ans. Shortly after Svostrup Kro, you'll pass Tvilum Bridge, where you'll find a jetty where you can moor and follow the path 200 metres up to Tvilum Church. There is a rest area and toilets up by the church.
Just past Tvilum Church, you'll see a white sign on your right telling you that Teglgårdsparkens Nærkøbens & Grill is located here - another distinguishing feature is that you'll see a fire pit in the meadow before Sankt Hans and afterwards it will look like a flat area without trees or anything else. You can stock up here or enjoy a lunch here.
A little over an hour after Teglgårdsparken you'll arrive at Kongensbro Teltplads, and Kongensbro Kro is on the opposite side, on your left - the inn is also one of the old Pramdrager Kroer, which is your accommodation for the night. The site is located just before the large bridge on your right.
A short distance after Kongensbro, you will be sailing on Tange Lake. You'll sail towards Ans, where you can stock up on provisions. Tange Sø is Denmark's largest artificial lake. At the end of Tange Lake is the Tange Power Station and the Energy Museum, where there will be a canoe transfer. You must use the designated canoe carriages, which you will typically find on the other side, as this is where the other travellers have left their carriages.
A short distance after Kongensbro, you will be sailing on Tange Lake.
As you approach Ans, be aware of sailing under the bridge. To find Ans Teltplads, where you must return your canoe by 16:00, keep slightly left and then left around the small island in the centre of Tange Sø. Then, on your left, you will arrive at Ans Teltplads.

It's not very wide or deep, and the trees grow over it so that branches and leaves almost form a "roof". But there's just enough room for your canoe to pass through and from here you'll enter the most beautiful lake in the middle of the forest.
Now the trip continues towards Silkeborg, where you'll be travelling on the 2.5 km long Remstrup River. Remstrup Å runs from Brassø to Silkeborg Harbour/Silkeborg Kanocenter, where the canoe must be returned to us

Before Svejbæksnævringen you will find the restaurants: Ålekroen, Traktørstedet Ludvigslyst and Skyttehusets Café - remember to check their opening hours if lunch is to be enjoyed here, where you can drop off or pick up your canoe/kayak. A little further on, still on the right, is Ålekroen.
You'll then sail past the Silkeborg Papirfabrik area, where Jysk Musik & Teaterhus, cinema, hotel, restaurants etc. are located.
A short distance after Kongensbro you will sail on Lake Tange Sø. Tange Sø is Denmark's largest artificial lake. As you approach Ans, be aware of sailing under the bridge. Then, if you keep to the right, you can take a break at Sahl Rasteplads, where there is a toilet. Otherwise, keep slightly left and then left around the small island in the centre of Tange Sø. Then, on your left, you will arrive at Ans Teltplads. You'll set up camp for the night. In Ans, there are shopping opportunities and eateries.
Day 4:
On the left, after about half an hour's sailing, you'll find Tange Søbad, where there is a rest area with a toilet. It's a great place to take a dip.
At the end of Tange Lake is Tangeværket, where there will be a carry-over with the canoe. You must pull the canoe up on land and use the designated canoe carts, which you will typically find on the other side, as this is where the other travellers have left their carts. The Energy Museum is also located at Tangeværket. It is free for children up to the age of 17 to visit the museum.
After Tangeværket, you have about an hour's sail to Bjerringbro, where there are shopping opportunities and places to eat - be sure to stock up on fresh supplies of provisions.
Approximately 1 hour after Tangeværket you will arrive at Bjerringbro Teltplads, where you can shop and eat. After stocking up on fresh provisions, you have about 30 minutes to Kjællinghøl Teltplads, which is just before the Kjællinghøl Bridge on your left - pay attention to these directions. Here at this very primitive campsite you'll set up camp for the night.
Day 5:
Before Bamsebo Camping there is Busbjerg Rasteplads, with toilet and tables/benches. When you arrive in Ulstrup, Dannebrogpladsen will be on your right, just after the bridge. It is a large green grassy area and there is also a fantastic nature playground here. In Ulstrup, there are shopping opportunities and eateries.
When you arrive at Langå Camping, which is located just before Langå Bådlaug, you pull the canoe ashore and leave it in the same way you found it.

Recommended places to stay: Åstedbro Teltplads, Voervadsbro Teltplads, Alling Vest Teltplads and De Små Fisk Teltplads*
*Any accommodation fees are not included in the price.
Day 1:
From Tørring you have a 2-hour sail to "Verdens Ende", which is a landing place without toilets, with tables/benches and a bird tower. Then you have a 1-hour sailing trip with many turns to Åle. The first part of the trip between Tørring and Åle is the most winding part of the Gudenå. You sail through a large flat wetland with reed forests and many tributary streams. At Åle Teltplads there is a toilet and table/bench set, and it's a great place to take a break.
After a good hour, you'll reach Åstedbro Teltplads where there are toilets, tables/bench sets and the Åstedbro Grill - here you set up camp for the night.
Day 2:
You're away from civilisation and the first place you'll come to is Gudenå Camping, located in Brestenbro - here you'll have to pay a small fee for a pitch. They have a nice cafeteria here. After Brestenbro, the water is deeper and the river a little wider. At Bredvadmølle there is a rest area with a toilet, which you'll find by turning right just before Bredvad Bro.
Day 3:
If you sail to the right, you will arrive at Ry boat harbour, the rowing club and Skimminghøj Teltplads. It's easy to moor at the campsite and walk up to Ry town, where there are shopping and places to eat - make sure to stock up on water as there is no possibility of this at Alling Vest Teltplads.
Alling Vest Teltplads is a fantastically intimate site. It is an incredibly beautiful area that is protected and the area offers many opportunities for fantastic hikes. Camp here for the night.
Day 4:
The tour now heads out through Rosvig and into Julsø.
Himmelbjerget - keep left when you reach Julsø. Before you arrive at Himmelbjerget, there is a rest area on the left inside the bay, from where you can walk through the forest and find your way to Himmelbjerget. However, if you want to visit/climb Himmelbjerget, most people choose to stay at Hotel Julsø, which is also where the Hjejlen and the scheduled boats are docked. Remember to either pull your canoe/kayak up to the left of the tour boats at bridge 51 or to the far right of Hjejlen and the tour boats' moorings at the small sandy beach.
Møgelø is located to the right after Himmelbjerget. Møgelø is an island in Julsø opposite Himmelbjerget. The name Møgelø means "Big Island" as it is the largest in the lake with 28 acres of land.
Before Svejbæksnævringen you will find the restaurants: Ålekroen, Traktørstedet Ludvigslyst and Skyttehusets Café - check their opening hours if you want to enjoy lunch.
After Svejbæksnævringen, you'll find Slåensø on your left, and with its crystal clear spring water one of Denmark's cleanest freshwater lakes.
The Paradise Islands are also to the left, and if you have the time, you can sail to Paradise and experience this beautiful area.
Now you pass through Sejssnævringen and into Brassø, where De Små Fisk Teltplads is on the right-hand side and you set up camp for the night. A short walk into Sejs brings you to shopping and places to eat. It's a lovely scenic park-like area with space for ball games. There is also a swimming area that is "fenced in".
Day 5:
It's a must to sail through Klüver's canal, which is located after Bridge no. 7. It's not very wide or deep and the trees grow over it, so the branches and leaves almost form a "roof". But there's just enough room for you to sail your canoe through, and from here you enter the most beautiful lake in the middle of the forest. The lake is called Avnsø and is usually called "The Glasses", a name given to the lake due to its shape because it actually resembles a pair of old-fashioned nose glasses.
Now you're heading towards Silkeborg, where you'll be travelling on the 2.5 km long Remstrup River. Remstrup Å runs from Brassø to Silkeborg Harbour, where Silkeborg Kanocenter is also based, and this is where your trip ends. If you're not in a hurry to get home, you could take a short walk up to Silkeborg's cosy town centre with shopping opportunities, boutiques and eateries.
